As China counts down to the much-hyped 2008 Summer Olympics, efforts are under way to prepare for its sister event – the Paralympics. The Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games will begin on September 6 till September 17, with the largest number of sports events ever. In addition to Sailing events in Qingdao and Equestrian events in Hong Kong, 18 sports events will be held in Beijing.
Public Facilities for Disables:
Beijing and all co-host cities are working to become fully accessible to all residents, including people and athletes with a disability, when the Paralympic Games are held in September 2008. The transportation system used for the Olympic Games will be used during the Paralympic Games, with emphasis on the special needs of those in wheelchairs. There are a number of dedicated cars and an adequate number of refitted buses will be provided for wheelchair users and all the other participants in the Paralympic Games. Access ramps, wheelchair-friendly doors, elevators and walking aids have been widely installed in hotels, buses, subway entrances, sports venues and other public environments, however the condition in small inn, hostels or countryside is not so promising.
